Unarmed Combatives - An introduction to Damithurt Silat

            Picture
All too often, we are reminded that our society has become increasingly violent.  As a result many people have taken to “going armed” – they seek out training, apply and receive their Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license and feel this prepares them for what lies ahead.  While a firearm can be a great equalizer, you are going to need additional skills in your toolbox.  Not all encounters that you face will justify lethal force, not all encounters will lend themselves to drawing a firearm.  What do you do then?  How do you keep yourself and your loved ones safe?

In Unarmed Combatives we will explore the use empty hand techniques to deal with attack scenarios where you are not justified in using deadly force.  We will look at using empty hand techniques to employ a firearm in lethal force encounters.  We will also look at the idea of using awareness to avoid an encounter, mindset to de-escalate an encounter, application of empty hand skills to counter an attack, and escape techniques to evade attackers.  To accomplish this students will develop a skill set that will prepare them for these situations.

Based on Michael Janich’s system for unarmed combatives students will learn practical unarmed skills (Damithurt Silat), empty-hand defenses against edged weapons (Counter-Blade Concepts), and the defensive use of impact weapons (flashlights, sticks, etc). We will focus on these topics, while at the same time identifying and developing the body mechanics, leverages, patterns of motion, and reactive principles that serve as “common ground” to all of these skill sets. This approach enables students to develop practical, usable, and highly retainable skills in a very short time and allows them to easily adapt these skills to different weapons and circumstances.

This course is being taught by Bryan McKean who has been a student of Mr. Janich’s since 2002.  He is currently a Certified Instructor in MBC and has assisted Mr. Janich on many occasions.  In addition to MBC, Bryan also holds multiple black belts in several traditional martial arts, is a reserve policeman and has taught this series for many company’s, dojos, and individual groups.
